Clorox: identification of 2,700 MWh/year of potential electricity savings

The plant’s energy efficiency assessment identified the compressed air system as the main improvement opportunity.

The starting point

Clorox commissioned Grupo Nabla to carry out an energy efficiency assessment of its plant. The goal was to find out where energy consumption was concentrated and which savings opportunities offered the best balance between investment and results.

What we did

  • We surveyed the facilities, processes and operating and maintenance routines to identify the main energy uses.
  • We measured consumption and walked the compressed air network to detect leaks and efficiency losses.
  • We cross-checked the results against production records and bills to establish a performance baseline.
  • We presented a portfolio of measures prioritized by savings, investment and payback period.

The result

The assessment identified the compressed air system as the plant’s main energy efficiency improvement opportunity, with potential savings of 2,700 MWh per year.

Compressed air is one of the most expensive forms of energy in industry: much of the electricity the compressor uses is lost through leaks, poorly set pressures and uses that do not need it. That is why, in many plants, it is where the largest savings appear for the smallest investment.
