Papelera San Andrés de Giles: identification of 2,149 MWh/year of potential energy savings

The plant’s energy efficiency assessment found savings on three fronts: a solar PV system, thermal processes and compressed air.

The starting point

Papelera San Andrés de Giles commissioned Grupo Nabla to carry out an energy efficiency assessment of its plant. The goal was to find out where energy consumption was concentrated and which improvements offered the best balance between investment and savings.

What we did

  • We surveyed the facilities, processes and operating and maintenance routines to identify the main energy uses.
  • We measured consumption in the thermal processes and the compressed air system, where we also walked the network to detect leaks.
  • We assessed the feasibility of generating its own energy with a solar PV system, based on consumption, tariffs and available space.
  • We presented an improvement plan prioritized by savings, investment and payback period.

The result

The assessment identified potential savings of 2,149 MWh per year, with three main opportunities:

  • 73%: installation of a solar PV system, to generate on site part of the energy the plant currently buys from the grid.
  • 10%: improvements to thermal processes.
  • 8.4%: improvements to the compressed air system.
